Cache
Cache stands as the most beloved, geometrically pure, and community-revered three-lane competitive battleground in the history of Counter-Strike. Originally conceptualized and built by veteran level designer Sal "Volcano" Garozzo for Counter-Strike: Source in 2011, Cache was subsequently rebuilt in collaboration with master 3D environmental artist Shawn "FMPONE" Snelling in 2013 for CS:GO. Set in the desolate Chernobyl nuclear exclusion zone near the abandoned Ukrainian city of Pripyat, Cache features concrete warehouse facilities, overgrown Soviet industrial architecture, rusted pipe networks, and the iconic yellow crane framing the central plaza. As one of the most balanced, fast-flowing maps ever designed, Cache served as an uninterrupted pillar of the Major championship circuit for over five years. Architecturally, Cache represents the absolute pinnacle of competitive three-lane design. The layout is remarkably symmetrical and intuitive: a vast central mid corridor ("Middle") connects directly to both bombsites through distinct choke points. To the west lies the B-bombsite, framed by the narrow choke of "B-Main," the elevated "Sun Room," and the defensive "Checkers" room. To the east lies the expansive A-bombsite, approached through the metal squeaky door ("Squeaky") and the wide industrial corridor of "A-Main." The tactical heartbeat of Cache is the fierce, high-speed struggle for Middle control. Mid on Cache is the most influential corridor in the game: a Terrorist team that secures Mid gains immediate access to the "Highway" route into the A-bombsite, as well as the "Vents" and "Checkers" route into B. The famous "Mid Boost"—where a player crouches beneath the rusted metal shipping container allowing a teammate to jump onto their head—enables an AWP sniper to peek directly into CT-Spawn and Highway, catching rotating defenders in the blink of an eye. Counter-Terrorists counter this by throwing deep Mid smokes and z-connector flashes, turning Mid into a high-stakes duel zone within three seconds of the round start. Statistical telemetry compiled across more than 17,200 professional LAN matches demonstrates that Cache boasts one of the most flawless factional balances in esports history, averaging 50.4 percent Counter-Terrorist win rate against 49.6 percent for the attacking Terrorist side. Because rotation routes are short and predictable, matches on Cache are decided by crisp aim duels, flawless crosshair placement, and rapid mid-round trading rather than convoluted multi-stage utility gimmicks. Cache is permanently immortalized in gaming lore as the setting for the most electrifying individual play in Counter-Strike history. At the ESL One Cologne 2016 Major semifinals on Cache B-site, Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev, playing for Team Liquid against Swedish powerhouse Fnatic, dropped down from the elevated Heaven platform and eliminated an advancing Dennis "dennis" Edman with an impossible falling no-scope AWP shot, followed instantaneously by a second long-range no-scope that eliminated Freddy "KRIMZ" Johansson across the site. The crowd erupted into pandemonium, and Valve permanently commemorated the play with official in-game graffiti on the wall beneath Heaven showing an angel holding an AWP with a missing scope. With community master FMPONE crafting a dedicated ground-up rebuild for Counter-Strike 2, Cache remains an immortal legend of tactical purity, historic Major deciders, and unforgettable esports grandeur.
