[05] — The dossier · long-form
A documentary biography of the Ukrainian rifler who went from NAVI's six-man experiment to B8's captaincy and back to star status, built from HLTV profile data, HLTV news records and tournament reports.
Andrii Kukharskyi plays under the name npl. He was 21 at the time of the profile record, Ukrainian, and listed as a member of B8, with career prize money of $159,543 and a three-month Rating 3.0 of 1.16. The team history contains three entries, and they read like a compressed history of the Ukrainian school of player development: NAVI Junior from December 2021 to December 2022, Natus Vincere from December 2022 to the summer of 2023, and B8 since July 2023. He is a product of the same academy that produced Valeriy "b1t" Vakhovskiy before him and Daniil "headtr1ck" alongside him, and his route to the main roster ran through a mechanism NAVI had used once before: the six-man experiment.
The debut came on 14 December 2022 at the BLAST Premier World Final in Abu Dhabi, where NAVI brought back the six-man setup they had first trialled in the COVID-era online season of late 2020. Minutes before NAVI's opening Group B series against Vitality, it was announced that the 17-year-old academy graduate would play the first map, Inferno, in place of Viktor "sdy" Orudzhev, with the club stating that npl would appear on "select maps" and that substitutions would be possible mid-series with ten minutes' notice — a first for a big LAN tournament if executed. The series itself was lost to Vitality, and across three maps played against Vitality, HEROIC and Liquid the debutant averaged 0.67. The numbers were poor; the audition was not. Sixteen days later, on 30 December 2022, NAVI announced that sdy had been released and that npl would take his place as a full-time member of the main roster moving forward.
The promotion placed a teenager into a dressing room containing Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev, Denis "electroNic" Sharipov and b1t, under the coaching of Andrii "B1ad3" Gorodenskiy. Kukharskyi's own account of the first weeks, given to HLTV before his full-time debut at BLAST Premier Spring Groups in January 2023, avoided every available superlative: "Maybe two years ago I could only dream about this, but now it is a reality. Now I'm just learning from them and getting experience. Practice is good, I am learning a lot. Sometimes I make a mistake, sometimes a lot of mistakes, but I'm trying to fix them." The sentence structure — dream, reality, mistakes, fixes — would remain the pattern of his public speech for the rest of his career.
The 2023 season with Natus Vincere produced the starkest statistical divergence of Kukharskyi's career. Across 63 maps in a NAVI jersey he averaged 0.92, by a distance the lowest output on the roster — the nearest team-mate, Ilya "Perfecto" Zalutskiy, sat at 1.02 — and he finished in the red in all but one of his tournament appearances. The context matters as much as the number: the 2023 NAVI project was itself underperforming, finishing the first half of the year without a title and failing to make the playoffs at the BLAST.tv Paris Major, and the teenager absorbed the roles nobody else wanted while the star system around him misfired.
Inside that difficult aggregate sat the best individual stretch of his NAVI career. At the European RMR for the Paris Major in April 2023, npl led Natus Vincere through a flawless 3-0 qualifier — a double-overtime escape against Into the Breach in the opener, a 16-6 defeat of Falcons on Ancient, and a clean 2-0 over the Intel Grand Slam holders FaZe — averaging 1.34 across four maps and topping his team's charts. HLTV's report noted that the figure was a massive improvement on his previous NAVI record of 0.90 and quoted the explanation he gave the broadcast: "Maybe because I can understand what we are doing now... I'm not as scared as I was, for example, and a lot of ideas electroNic and B1ad3 want to do, I understand them more easily than before." NAVI secured their 19th Major appearance with the 17-year-old as the joint second highest-rated player of the qualifier.
"Maybe because I can understand what we are doing now... I'm not as scared as I was, for example, and a lot of ideas electroNic and B1ad3 want to do, I understand them more easily than before."
The Major itself ended in a Legends-stage exit, but not before Kukharskyi produced the two moments the live blog preserved. In the elimination match against FaZe — a fixture the preview framed as "from grand final bouts to fighting for their lives" — he hit a 1vs2 clutch HLTV's live desk called devastating as NAVI closed in on the map, and later, with NAVI leading at halftime on Mirage, he fumbled a bomb explosion in a round the site recorded with a mixture of sympathy and mockery. The match went to FaZe. Around the Major, the roster's results held a consistent shape: third-to-fourth at IEM Katowice 2023, third-to-fourth at ESL Pro League Season 17, third-to-fourth at IEM Rio 2023 — three semi-final-level finishes at the biggest events of the first half, none converted, and a group-stage exit at the one that counted most.
The reckoning arrived in June 2023. On 17 June, reports stated that NAVI were set to bench npl and consider moving to an international roster, with the organisation's options limited by the war in Ukraine and the CEO's previously stated preference for housing the best Ukrainian talent colliding with the need for results. The move was framed as the end of "the npl experiment": six months as a sixth man, six as a starter, an average of 0.92, and a team direction that now pointed towards imported players. He was moved to the inactive roster on 30 June.
The bench spell lasted nine days. On 9 July 2023, B8 announced his signing, with the 17-year-old taking the spot previously occupied by Altair "kAlash" Askarov, who had left the organisation five days earlier. HLTV's report on the transfer was blunt about what B8 were buying: a player who had struggled to adapt to tier-one competition, averaging 0.92 across 63 maps, but one whose "surprisingly strong 1.34-rated performance at the BLAST.tv Paris Major RMR" stood as the proof of ceiling. The organisation's hope, the report concluded, was that the experience Kukharskyi now brought would be enough to help the Ukrainian ensemble reach the next level.
The move home reframed his career. At NAVI he had been the youngest component of a struggling superteam; at B8 he joined a Ukrainian project one tier down, with a roster built for development rather than immediate contention. The transition showed immediately in his numbers: within a year HLTV would describe him as B8's highest-rated player, and within eighteen months he would be their captain. The loan arrangement — he remained NAVI property, turning out for B8 on loan — would hold for two years before being made permanent in August 2025.
The 2024 season was the one that turned the signing into a success story. B8's breakthrough began with headtr1ck's arrival from Ninjas in Pyjamas in April 2024, and the report of their first title together — CCT Season 2 Europe Series 2, won 2-1 over BETBOOM in a grand final that went 13-6 on Ancient, 8-13 on Anubis and 13-9 on Mirage — credited "Andrii 'npl' Kukharskyi's troops" and described how npl and headtr1ck led the side through a 19-map playoff campaign. Weeks later B8 won the Elisa Invitational over Sashi, and in October they reached the ESL Challenger Katowice final over paiN — the report of the transfer-to-permanent noted that the run included beating Aurora, then competing as Eternal Fire — before SAW denied them the trophy. It was B8's first sustained success on LAN, and the second-place medal at Katowice remains the highest LAN finish of Kukharskyi's senior career.
The online harvest ran alongside. B8 strung together top finishes in the CCT and RES circuits, climbed into the world's top 20 by the end of 2024, and built the profile that made them a fixture of European qualification fields. Kukharskyi's role evolved with it: the rifler who had been signed as a reclamation project became the in-game leader, taking what HLTV's later transfer report called "the leadership reigns" while remaining the team's most productive fragger. The dual burden is rare at any level and rarer in a tier-two organisation with no veteran presence to lean on; B8's 2024 suggested the weight suited him.
The season's one wound was self-inflicted by the calendar. At the Europe RMR B for the Perfect World Shanghai Major in November 2024, B8 — with npl and headtr1ck explicitly billed in the preview as the players who would lift the organisation's RMR curse — went 0-3 in series and missed the Major. The elimination match against Astralis encapsulated the failure: B8 won their Mirage pick 13-11, led the Nuke decider 11-4 behind a strong CT half, and then lost eleven consecutive rounds as the Danes, without device in the building, rallied to a 13-11 win. HLTV's report noted that B8 had been competitive in every previous RMR, recording at least two victories before bowing out; this time they did not survive long enough for that consolation.
The curse lifted in April 2025. At the BLAST.tv Austin Major Europe Regional Qualifier, B8 beat Astralis 2-1 — 13-10 on Mirage, 7-13 on Inferno, 16-14 on Ancient in overtime — to reach their first Major, consigning Astralis to a fifth consecutive absence in the process. The victory carried the symmetry the sport occasionally provides: the same opponent, the same fixture type, seven months after the Nuke collapse, and this time the overtimes went B8's way.
At the Major itself, B8's Stage 1 was flawless — Imperial, OG and Wildcard beaten in succession for a 3-0 record — and Kukharskyi's assessment of it afterwards became one of the defining quotations of B8's season. "I'd say that that wasn't hard, because Stage 1 has a lot of weak teams, and we were one of the favorites, so I don't think that's a surprise," he told HLTV, declining the modesty that first-time Major captains usually perform. On the Wildcard decider, where B8 fumbled match point on Train and lost 14-16 in overtime before winning Dust2 13-6 and Inferno 13-2, he was specific about the wobble: "We didn't lose Train because of their game, only because of our mistakes. We started this best-of-three a bit nervously and shakily." The admission doubled as a diagnosis of the roster's permanent condition — nervous starts, strong finishes — that would define every Major run that followed.
"We didn't lose Train because of their game, only because of our mistakes. We started this best-of-three a bit nervously and shakily."
Stage 2 ended in the ninth-to-eleventh place B8 would share with every Stage 2 exit of their Major career: FURIA, one month into an English-speaking rebuild, recovered from losing Mirage to win the series 2-1 in round four. The Austin campaign nonetheless rewrote the organisation's record — first Major, first top-24 finish, first 3-0 group — and Kukharskyi's own standing rose with it. Two months later, on 4 August 2025, NAVI and B8 announced that his transfer had become permanent after the two-year loan. HLTV's report of the deal summarised the loan spell in a sentence that doubled as his career thesis: the rifling IGL had become their highest-rated player, taken up the leadership reins, helped win a string of top online competitions, pushed B8 into the world's top 20, and delivered the organisation's first LAN successes.
The captaincy ended in October 2025, in the middle of the season's most congested stretch. On 15 October, HLTV's short news recorded that alex666 — the veteran IGL signed in April 2024 — had taken over from npl as B8's in-game leader. The handover was never framed as a demotion; the roster's structure after it simply redistributed the burden, with alex666 calling and Kukharskyi freed to play the star rifle role his 85 firepower score advertised. The results in the new configuration arrived quickly: a 2-0 pool at PGL Masters Bucharest over 3DMAX, a playoff-securing win over Legacy in the same event, and the deep Stage 3 run at the Budapest Major in November-December, where B8 beat Liquid, fnatic, 3DMAX and paiN across the stages and fell one Swiss victory short of the playoff bracket.
The scoreboard data from the period shows the trade-off the move produced. At the CS Asia Championships in May 2026, where B8 beat Ninjas in Pyjamas 13-9 and The MongolZ 2-1 to reach the playoffs, Kukharskyi's quarter-final against MOUZ ended 2-0 — Overpass lost 8-13, Ancient lost 20-22 after triple overtime — but his own line in the marathon was the one the live coverage built its story around: a 1v3 late in the first half that sparked the comeback attempt and a pistol-round four-kill that started the second, in a series where MOUZ's jL won four clutches and xertioN's 1.51 decided the maps. Nine clutches were won across the two maps, four by one MOUZ player, and B8's defeat by the margin of two overtimes on the decider was the closest a top-ten team came to losing that event's quarter-finals.
His public voice in the period settled into the analytical register of a player who had captained through failure. The exit interviews from PGL Cluj-Napoca in February 2026, where B8 lost to Aurora, The MongolZ and FURIA, contained the most self-critical passage of his career — "I can say that some players or the whole team didn't want to fix mistakes during the tournament, and every game we just played like we did before, making the same mistakes, so it was very hard to play" — alongside an unprompted defence of the team's 16-year-old loanee AWPer, Danylo "s1zzi" Vinnyk: "He's a very good player... we weren't able to show our game... he's a very good player, and talented." A week earlier he had given the same endorsement its public formulation: "He has the X-factor; if we want to become tier-one in the future, we need it." In April 2026, asked about the Cologne Major cycle, he revealed the psychological reset the roster had performed around Major qualification: "Even if we didn't qualify, we said that it's okay." The sentence was the captain's old burden being set down — and the results that followed, three Majors in thirteen months, suggested the reset worked.
"He's a very good player... we weren't able to show our game... he's a very good player, and talented."
The IEM Cologne Major in June 2026 produced the fullest demonstration of the post-captaincy B8. The 0-2 start — The MongolZ again, 16-14 in overtime on Mirage after a 10-2 half — was followed by four consecutive elimination wins: M80 2-0 in a series that included a 22-20 Inferno overtime, GamerLegion 2-1 after a 2-9 comeback on the Nuke decider, MIBR 2-1 with Kukharskyi's quad-kill in a 2v4 forcing the third map, and BIG 2-1 in the decider for the last Stage 3 berth, s1zzi posting 1.49 across the series. Kukharskyi's individual contributions sat inside the collective story rather than above it — the quad-kill on Nuke, the save-round multi-kills against GamerLegion — and the pattern matched the attribute profile: firepower converted through structure rather than solo heroics.
Three weeks later came the result the entire project had been built towards. At the Esports World Cup in August 2026, B8 beat Vitality 2-1 to reach the playoffs, overcoming a 9-3 deficit on Inferno and routing the world's best team on Dust2 after pushing Mirage to overtime from an 11-7 lead. The upset — Vitality's fourth consecutive loss on their former stronghold — was sealed with the Ukrainian side reading Dan "apEX" Madesclaire "like a book", and Kukharskyi's broadcast interview afterwards explained the margin in the least romantic terms available: "We are very happy obviously, everyone, because we felt before the tournament we were in very good shape. We had very good pracs, we even had one prac against Vitality on Dust2, which helped us a little bit." The quotation completed a theme that runs through his entire career record: the difference between B8's floor and ceiling, in his telling, has never been talent but the willingness to fix mistakes — and on the days the fixing happened, the best team in the world lost a decider to a roster assembled for a fraction of the cost.
The same month, earlier in the EWC group stage, B8's 20 May loss to MOUZ at the CS Asia Championships had already shown the level gap that remains: a playoff spot at a tier-two event converted, a quarter-final at a stacked one lost in overtimes. The 2026 record now contains both.
HLTV's attribute scores for Kukharskyi read like the statistical record of the career pivot. Firepower 85 is the highest rifle score in the B8 roster and the headline of the profile; Trading 80 supports it; Entrying at 70 and Opening at 58 place him in the aggressive-mid-round band rather than the designated-entry band; Clutching 45 and Utility 53 are the modest floor beneath; Sniping 0 completes the rifle-only picture. The shape describes exactly what the captaincy-to-star conversion produced: a player whose value is concentrated in sustained damage output inside a structure someone else now calls, with the 80 trading score marking him as the man who harvests the aggression alex666's system generates.
The mechanical base is documented on FACEIT, where the profile shows 5,175 matches at a 58.0% win rate, a 1.37 average KDR, a 50.0% headshot percentage and a longest winning streak of 19, with historic FPL placements across the CS:GO Europe, CS:GO Challenger Europe and CS2 Europe ladders — a season-best 25th in FPL CS:GO Europe with a 1589 Elo across eight games, and multiple top-40 finishes in the Challenger circuit. The 50% headshot figure, against the 58-61% of his entry partner esenthial and the 61% of kensizor, marks him as a spray-oriented rifler rather than a first-bullet specialist, consistent with the multi-kill patterns in his match reports: quads in broken 2v4s, triples in save rounds, damage that accumulates across a round rather than arriving in its first second.
The aggregate record at the time of writing: $159,543 in career prize money, the highest of the B8 core; three Major appearances with B8 (Austin Stage 2, Budapest Stage 3, Cologne Stage 3) plus the Legends-stage Paris Major with NAVI; three third-to-fourth finishes at IEM Katowice, EPL Season 17 and IEM Rio 2023 in a NAVI jersey; one LAN trophy from the Elisa Invitational, a CCT title, and a second place at ESL Challenger Katowice; no EVP mentions and no Top 20 placements. He is 21, and the recent form line — 1.16 over three months, a 3-4th at Logitech G Play Connect 2026 after a 13-6, 13-8, 13-9, 13-11 opening day, a second-place finish in the PGL Masters Bucharest 2026 Europe closed qualifier where Nemiga swept the decider 3-0, and a Stake Ranked Episode 4 opener against Luminosity on 1 October — describes the same team trajectory as always: qualification certainty, bracket fragility.
The open question of his career is the one his own quotations have been circling since Cluj-Napoca. The talent identification is complete — HLTV's transfer report called him B8's highest-rated player, his teammates call him the standard-setter, and the Vitality result proved the ceiling exists — but the conversions remain unbanked: no Major playoff bracket, no tier-one EVP, no trophy above the Elisa Invitational's weight class. The 2026 season's remaining structure gives him the same stage he has occupied since Austin: a B8 roster with the firepower to beat anyone on a given day and the Swiss-stage record to prove it. What separates that profile from the tier-one career his academy classmate headtr1ck once forecast for him is a single category of results — the bracket wins — and his own diagnosis of the gap, given twice in 2026 in almost the same words, remains the most reliable guide to whether it closes.
