[05] — The dossier · long-form
A documentary biography of the Bulgarian anchor whose three-month gamble at Team Liquid became the defining detour of a tier-two career — and who reached his first Major top-16 eight years after his first contract, built from HLTV profile data, HLTV news records and published interviews.
Aleks Petrov is 25 at the time of his profile record, Bulgarian, and his competitive biography begins in October 2017 with HeadShotBG, a stint that ran to June of the following year. He would have been a teenager for all of it. The next entry, FATE, from January to September 2019, placed him inside one of the longer-standing organisations of the Bulgarian scene, and the third began the stretch that shaped him: SKADE, from September 2019 to September 2022, three full years inside a single club in an era when most tier-two European players changed teams every six months.
The SKADE years were built on structural moves rather than individual headlines. The organisation signed an ex-Bpro roster in September 2019, the month Petrov's tenure began, and refreshed it in January 2022 with the additions of bubble and dream3r. His three-year stay spanned the CS:GO-to-CS2 transition entire, and its rhythm was the rhythm of the European minor circuit: closed qualifiers, regional leagues, the occasional RMR gate. What the record does not show is a single notable LAN trophy; what it does show is a player accruing thousands of maps in the European tier-two circuit, the experience base HLTV's own feature writing would later describe as "a wealth of matches in the tier two European scene" that "no young North American talent could possibly hope to match." When SKADE parted ways with its Bulgarian roster on 14 September 2022, Petrov surfaced briefly as ex-SKADE before the next project arrived within six weeks.
There is no FACEIT summary attached to his profile record — a small absence that itself says something about how his career was tracked. Where the Brazilian and Swedish players of his generation left public ladder footprints, Petrov's development is legible almost entirely through team records: ten clubs across nine years, entered and exited with dates but almost no individual profile features between 2017 and 2023.
On 29 October 2022, 500 announced a Bulgarian roster, and Petrov's HLTV record anchors him to the organisation from that point. By mid-2023 the team's identity was fully national: Denislav "dennyslaw" Dimitrov, Nikolay "niki1" Pantaleev, Ivan "Patrick" Ivanov, Hristiyan "REDSTAR" Pironkov and Kalin "KalubeR" Erenditsov, with Denis "Grashog" Hristov as coach. The organisation would go on to reach a peak HLTV ranking of 22nd in 2023, the high-water mark of Bulgarian Counter-Strike in the CS2 era.
The player profile that mattered was assembled in HLTV's July 2023 feature "Who is Rainwaker and why did Liquid want him?", which mined his 2022 and 2023 numbers for a verdict. The statistics returned: a 0.61 deaths per round, 73% KAST, a 1.12 rating, 77.9 ADR and 0.71 kills per round, with an average 1.04 impact. The article's conclusion compared him, number for number, to Keith "NAF" Markovic — "essentially, the stats would suggest Rainwaker is more of a NAF-type player, passive yet consistent, and a strong foundation upon which to build a team." He studied the demos of Robin "ropz" Kool and Sergey "Ax1Le" Rykhtorov, the two players HLTV identified as his models, both of them lurk-tilted, round-management players rather than entry duelists.
The qualitative portrait came from dennyslaw, his teammate across nearly his entire career to that point and his roommate "since the beginning." His strengths, in dennyslaw's telling: "His intelligence, his ability to close out the rounds, and ability to get us out of super disadvantage positions." And the line that would follow him through every subsequent roster move: "His clutch ability is insane. This, combined with his mechanics, was winning us so many rounds we were not supposed to win."
"His clutch ability is insane. This, combined with his mechanics, was winning us so many rounds we were not supposed to win."
The gaps in the record were equally specific. Filtered to LANs above local or regional calibre, his history returned exactly three events: IEM Fall 2021 Europe, Elisa Masters Espoo 2022, and the BLAST Paris Major European RMR B in April 2023 — the last of them 500's attempt to reach the Paris Major, documented in HLTV's day-one live coverage of EU RMR B. "Lots of players over the course of CS have had little to no experience and shown good form in their early events," would be the response from the coach about to sign him. The risk was named, quantified, and accepted.
In the off-season of 2023, Team Liquid did something no North American organisation of its stature had done: it abandoned its regional recruitment pipeline. The team had fallen in grand finals of ESL Pro League and the BLAST World Final the previous year and made top four at IEM Katowice, yet remained trophyless, and its answer was to go European — signing Robert "Patsi" Isyanov from Spirit and, less famously, Aleks "Rainwaker" Petrov from 500. Sources confirmed the deal on 21 June; the organisation confirmed it on 22 June; and HLTV dedicated a full feature to asking who the Bulgarian was. The organisation itself declined to oversell the move, telling HLTV: "The truth will be in the results," while YEKINDAR framed the churn in trophy terms — "We changed players to win championships." HLTV convened Moses, Launders and Maniac for an expert panel on the international pivot the same week.
The roster Petrov joined carried NAF, oSee and YEKINDAR from the previous iteration, and the comms question that dennyslaw had raised was answered within weeks. Patsi, asked about English communication in the new lineup at the end of August, said: "With YEKINDAR on the team, it's so much easier" — an acknowledgment that the team operated in a second language for most of its members, and that some players carried more of the load than others.
The answer, from coach Damian "daps" Steele, was precise. "Rainwaker, honestly, was our main option for nitr0's replacement," he said, positioning the Bulgarian as the direct successor to Nick "nitr0" Cannella's defensive roles: "more stability in anchor spots on CT side" and, on offense, "a player who can fill some of the lurker roles on T side." dennyslaw endorsed the fit and flagged the friction: "Rainwaker was always the guy filling the most problematic positions we had in all different lineups we've played, so he changed a lot on CT... Lurking on defaults is what Rainwaker is most comfortable with." The article also named the two risks squarely. First, roles: at Liquid he would either take positions from more proven players or learn new ones, with NAF holding much of the T-side real estate he preferred. Second, language: "he has played his entire career thus far communicating in his native tongue," dennyslaw warned. "Maybe at the beginning it will be hard for him... people should support him and give him time to get used to it and he will show the real potential he has."
Petrov's own self-assessment, offered to HLTV before he had played a single official for the club, was five words long twice over: "doing what is needed for the team and staying calm and collected." daps reported that "so far he fits in well both in and out of the server." Liquid sat ninth in the world ranking on the day the signing closed. The community's verdict, visible in the comment thread of his own feature, ran from "Liquid top 50 incoming" to an entire subthread debating whether anyone had heard of him.
The debut was, by results, encouraging. At BLAST Premier Fall Groups on 15 July 2023, Liquid's European-majority squad beat G2 2-1 in its first series together, and a week later stood one win from the BLAST Fall Final before Astralis ended that run 2-0. At the IEM Cologne play-in in late July, Petrov gave the two interviews that bracket his Liquid stint's emotional range. Before elimination: "It's hard; I've never played in international rosters so I will need time" — the language barrier and the role churn dennyslaw had predicted, stated plainly on day two. And after his first arena LAN: "I can't describe it, it's insane," said of playing at IEM Cologne itself. That same day, Liquid took a map from 9INE on Ancient before the Polish team knocked them out of the event.
The pattern of the three months was a team in transition rather than a player failing individually. At Gamers8 in August, ENCE eliminated Liquid after a 16-5 demolition on Anubis. At ESL Pro League Season 18 in September, Liquid sent Lynn Vision to the Last Chance Stage after an Ancient trouncing and pushed Cloud9 into the elimination bracket, with daps stating the goal plainly: "Right now our goal is to try and peak as much as we can in Pro League." Then, on 3 October 2023, came the headline that ended it: "Official: Liquid bench Rainwaker; daps to play at BLAST Showdown" — the coach stepping into the lineup for the BLAST event while YEKINDAR captained, the first domino of the rebuild that would soon bring in cadiaN, Twistzz and skullz and leave no seat for the Bulgarian. On 23 November, Liquid released him. His Liquid rating, per HLTV's accounting of the stint, was "a modest 0.96."
"Right now our goal is to try and peak as much as we can in Pro League."
The post-mortem writes itself from the July feature's own warnings. dennyslaw had said the adaptation might leave him "a bit nerfed" initially; daps had said it "could take a little time for him to get comfortable." Liquid gave him three months, one trophyless event stretch, and a coaching vacancy to fill. The Bulgarian returned to the market in November 2023 with a tier-one education, a worse rating, and — the detail his old teammate had stressed — still new to English-language comms. The broader record's verdict arrived a year later, in July 2024, when HLTV's retrospective catalogue of "four of the most hype transfers that ultimately flopped" entered his profile's news feed; whatever the article's internal list, the fact that it surfaced there is itself the summary of how the move was remembered. HLTV's separate statistical review of Liquid's "fourth rebuild in three years," published the same month, closed the file on an organisation that had spent its budget searching for the formula its 2023 signings were supposed to provide.
500 brought him back on 21 December 2023, and HLTV's report on the return did the organization's editorialising for it: the Bulgarians had their "irreplaceable" player back, and the quotation marks were the reporter's, placed twice in one article around a word the team had used internally. The circumstances of the return were bleak — 500 ranked 133rd in the world, having "struggled without the 'irreplaceable' Rainwaker in these past few months" — and the reunion came with changes: Grashog moved back into coaching after temporarily stepping in as a player in November, and Georgi "SHiPZ" Grigorov taking the helm from niki1.
What followed was two years of continuous reconstruction around him. In March 2024, Grashog returned to the lineup as Patrick's permanent fifth and POP0V took over coaching duties. In May 2024, 500 signed CeRq and oxygeN, adding the Bulgarian AWPer whose profile had been built in North America. In January 2025, the team won the ICE Invitational. In April 2025, SHiPZ was benched. In July 2025, SPELLAN and oxygeN left, hampus arrived from Metizport, djL was named coach, and volt completed the roster — 500's pivot from a national project to an international one. In November 2025, CYPHER joined on loan and REDSTAR was benched.
Through all of it, Petrov's own numbers climbed. In HLTV's snapshot at the moment of 500's dissolution, his three-month rating stood at 1.14 across 121 maps with 0.72 kills per round — the best sustained stretch of his recorded career, achieved across the exact period in which the organisation around him changed coaches four times and replaced more than half its roster. The team closed 2025 with top-four finishes at NODWIN Clutch Series 2 and CCT Season 3 Europe Series 12, and exited the year ranked 70th, holding a peak VRS position of 25th earned earlier in the year.
The end came from outside the game. On 2 January 2026, HLTV reported that 500 was withdrawing from Counter-Strike, a decision announced by players Cai "CYPHER" Watson and Tsvetelin "CeRq" Dimitrov on X and attributed to Valve's amendment of the Tournament Operation Requirements, which banned skin gambling and case-opening sites from team jerseys and events. 500, an organisation built in part on gambling-sector sponsorship, became the amendment's most prominent casualty. The withdrawal ended a three-year stint in the game that had begun with the signing of the former SKADE core at the end of 2022 — the core that included Petrov.
The final 500 lineup — hampus, CeRq, Rainwaker, CYPHER, volt with djL coaching — disbanded into the market as ex-500, and for a month in January 2026 the Bulgarian's record lists no organisation at all. He was 24 years old, statistically at his career peak, and unemployed because of a jersey rule.
His next team signed him before it announced him. Petrov debuted for Monte in the online portion of BLAST Bounty Season 1 on 14 January 2026, playing a part in a 2-1 upset of Natus Vincere before Monte fell 0-2 to Falcons two days later — nearly a month before the organisation formalised his addition on 10 February. The signing completed a roster built in the previous months around Jack "Gizmy" von Spreckelsen, afro, AZUWU and Bymas, with Alexander "kakafu" Szymanczyk coaching; Petrov effectively replaced Gytis "ryu" Glušauskas, whom Astralis had acquired at the turn of the year. Monte sat 31st in the world ranking when the deal was announced, with a Copenhagen Gaming Week Showdown group against Tricked, ENCE and illwill as the next assignment.
The season built toward one event. At the IEM Cologne Major 2026, Monte navigated Stage 1 and Stage 2 to reach the 2-2 pool, where they met paiN on 9 June with a Stage 3 berth at stake. The series was a two-map statement: 13-5 on Nuke, then 13-11 on Dust2, with Monte overturning an early paiN lead on the decider. AZUWU's ace on the A site swung the middle of the map, and the final regulation round belonged to Petrov — HLTV's report credits him with "a crisp 3K on the B site" that "drove the final nail into paiN's coffin." His series line: 36 kills, 21 deaths, 94.0 ADR, 88.1% KAST, a 1.39 rating — second on the server only to AZUWU's 1.57, and the statistical signature of a player whose profile had always promised round-closing rather than highlight-making. biguzera, on the losing side, pointed at the opponent's texture afterward: "they have an aggressive playstyle. afro is very aggressive. It's difficult to play against this type of player."
The Stage 3 berth was Petrov's first Major top-16 — achieved at his second recorded attempt at a Major cycle's final gate, in his ninth year of competition, for an organisation he had joined eight weeks earlier. It also marked the first time in CS2 that paiN, the team his Liquid stint had briefly overlapped with in the public imagination, had failed to reach a Major's top 16. Monte entered that week ranked 22nd in the world, with Petrov's three-month rating at 1.15 across 50 maps.
What the record does not show is Stage 3 itself. The placement row ends there — Stage 3, Monte, IEM Cologne Major 2026 — and whatever happened inside the top 16 is outside the profile's granularity. What is documented is what came next, and it came fast.
Within a month of the Major, the Monte core had signed elsewhere. Gizmy's public statement laid out the sequence: "After the Major, the core told me that they were leaving to LG, and had also signed contracts before the Major. Pretty sad ending for a team I've led since the beginning, but that's how it goes sometimes." HLTV's reporting on the move drew the contractual distinction that matters for this biography: Bymas, afro and AZUWU joined Luminosity on free transfers after their Monte deals expired, while Petrov "did need to be bought out of his contract." The Bulgarian anchor was the only one of the four Monte players worth a transfer fee.
Luminosity — the 2016 Major-winning brand reacquired by founder Steve Maida for CAD 300,000 in January 2026 — announced the signing of Petrov and his teammates alongside lux, the Brazilian IGL, on 1 July 2026, with Monte's VRS points carrying the new roster into the top 20. The debut, at XSE Pro League the same day, opened a winless month: 0-3 in Guangzhou, then last place at the Esports World Cup, where Spirit beat Luminosity 2-0 on 13 August "to stay alive in Paris." lux's own assessment of the stretch named the problem without assigning blame: "Sometimes I have a very clear vision of what needs to be done, and they have a different one... We're players from different countries." The team fell ten places in the ranking inside two months of signing.
"Sometimes I have a very clear vision of what needs to be done, and they have a different one... We're players from different countries."
September brought the first points. At Radio Popular Roman Imperium Cup VIII, Luminosity finished second, losing both of their series against M80 — 2-1, then 0-2 in the deciding match on 14 September. At Logitech G Play Connect 2026 they beat Metizport 13-9, M80 13-4 and Ninjas in Pyjamas 13-11 in the group stage, dispatched BBL and B8 2-0 in the playoffs, and took 3DMAX to five maps in the final before losing 2-3 on 24 September. Two runner-up finishes in three weeks; a Stake Ranked Episode 4 match against B8 scheduled for 1 October as the next entry in the record.
The attribute profile HLTV assigns him is the least decorated of the current Luminosity lineup — Firepower 38, Entrying 48, Trading 15, Opening 34, Clutching 31, Sniping 0, Utility 31 — and the shape of it tells the same story his 0.61 deaths-per-round told in 2023. There is no standout category: no elite opening numbers, no entry assignment, no utility load, no sniping. What remains is the profile of a player whose contribution resists the attribute scale — the dennyslaw assessment, intelligence and round-closing, describing a skill set that lives between the categories rather than inside one of them.
The form curve across the record traces the arc precisely. At the moment of his Luminosity announcement in July 2026, his three-month rating stood at 1.10 across 51 maps, still carrying the Monte Major run. By the August 25 snapshot, after the winless month, it read 0.99 across 27. The profile record's most recent figure is 1.06 — recovery in progress, documented in the only way the modern circuit measures it, one VRS-eligible event at a time.
The career ledger at the time of writing: $156,836 in prize money; nine organisations in nine years; one Major appearance, at Stage 3, with its sticker set from Cologne 2026; zero Top 20 finishes, zero MVP medals, zero notable LAN trophies. Against that: a Liquid signing that HLTV considered worth a full investigative feature, a 500 project that reached 22nd in the world with him at its structural centre, and a Stage 3 Major berth won with a 94-ADR series against a Brazilian organisation that had spent 2025 winning international trophies. The record's last documented words about his play remain the ones dennyslaw gave HLTV in July 2023, and they have aged better than the transfer that prompted them: "winning us so many rounds we were not supposed to win."
